Barbican Cholivite boluses are the first slow-release choline
and vitamin E preparations on the market
What are they for?
Helping cows’ livers cope with the fat mobilization and negative immunity associated with calving.
What does Cholivite do?
Helping cows’ livers cope with the fat mobilization and negative immunity associated with calving.
What does Cholivite do?
The lactational demands for energy promote mobilization of fat stores which are transported mainly to the liver. Fat mobilization rates are higher in fatter cows, those carrying twins and in cows with conditions that negatively affect appetite. Fat that is not used as an energy source should be exported from the liver as Very Low Density Lipoproteins (VLDLs) but this capacity is limited post calving meaning fat gets stuck in the liver in excessive amounts, a condition commonly known as ‘fatty liver’ disease. ‘Fatty liver’ has a negative effect on milk yield and disease status.

Cholivite boluses contains high concentrations of rumen protected choline and vitamin E:
- Choline is used to build VLDLs which helps the liver to export fat.
- Vitamin E is an important anti-oxidant which helps the cow cope with the oxidative stress and negative immune effects of calving
Which cows would benefit the most?
Ones that are most at risk of excessive fat mobilization at calving:
Which herds would benefit the most?
Herds that have no fresh cow group are unable to continue supplementation of choline and/or methionine in the diet during the immediate post calving period. However, the week after calving is the time of maximum fat mobilization.
How should Cholivite be used?
Ones that are most at risk of excessive fat mobilization at calving:
- Over-conditioned animals
- Cows carrying twins
- Cows with an underlying disease that is limiting appetite.

How should Cholivite be used?
- At times of increased risk of fat mobilization feed rumen protected choline until the point of calving. At calving, two Cholivite boluses are recommended which will deliver 15.8g of rumen protected choline and 1000iu vitamin E per day for five days.
- Individual sick cows as an adjunct to other treatments eg at the time of correction of displaced abomasums, when using propylene glycol for treatment of subclinical ketosis
